Aside from the quirkiness, what do you think attracted him so much to this story and it's characters that he bought the film rights for it?

Maybe he saw a message in the book? He wears that bracelet that says life is short have fun. Maybe he wanted to portray that to the audience. While reading I could see Johnny in this part . It goes right along with many of his characters quirky loner types.

Any thoughts about what we know he could do with the character?

I think he was interested in Antoine cuz there's a change in the character as the book goes on. He starts out not caring about anyone but by the end he does care. I'm not good at this, but does this sound ok?

I agree with all the posts to this question-possibly he wanted to explore the "layers" that evolve of as this character begins to show an interest in other people around him. I am wondering is this book possibly a humorous satire and some of the humor was lost with translation? The description of the nurse visits to his room daily are presented in a humorous manner. Just wondering?

Yes I sure could see him playing Antoine too!

You are just fine..remember there's no right or wrong opinion. And you're right...he does care at the end.

That's an interesting thought...some of the humor could very easily be lost in translation.

I thought that the simplicity of the story and yet the depth of feeling may have been important to him. He buys such diametrically opposite books!

Probably-and possibly the humor if it is a satire-I just feel like parts of the book are narrated in a "tongue-in-cheek" fashion. JD does have a wide range of interest in books-which illustrates his intelligence and curiousity about the human animal-off topic but if he went all the way through school I could see him as a psychiatrist- one who combines medications with other alternative treatment options.

This idea just may turn into tomorrow's question....I like it better than the one I have. LOL

It feels like there is a little bit of Edward Scissorhands in Antoine, as his words are spare, and he is an observer.

I think Johnny is also an observer of life.

I agree about the simplicity yet deepness and allegory of this story and the subtle yet strong character arc is what may have led Johnny Depp to purchase the filml rights.

He'd make Antoine beautiful, I'd love to see him play this character!

(and be an old man with little kiddies around him.)

I think Johnny has a special bond with old people and children.

Good points and it would give JD a chance to use his all acting skills with the wide range of emotions infused throughout the book.

Great idea Deppraved! Edward Scissorhands! I didn't see that but it sure is there! I'd love to see Johnny play an older person...I think he'd bring such grace, dignity and charm to Antoine.
