Hibblette

A guy who pushes it to the edge.

Possibly the sex. And the fact that it is totally a part of the story. It's not just there to shock or titillate, it's there to tell the story.

And besides the nose-the complete ravagings of the disease.

I agree, Hibblette--kinda outdoes the George Jung decline, and I think that's probably an understatement! He does like his "damaged" individuals, and Johnny is very very good, great, at showing the humanity of these individuals.

Oh yeah, this is way past the George Jung decline...but what made Johnny want this part?

Aside from Malkovich's encouragement, I would hazard a guess at the complexity of the role and the full range of emotion present.

scene ten:

Rochester: "What am I then?"

Barry: "I don't know, John. What are you? There are so many different versions to choose from at the moment............."

I think it was the challenge of the extreme range of acting required to bring this person to life throughout the film. Also the contradictions within the character of Wilmot - the extreme honesty vs the extreme debauchery; the extreme cynicism vs the real love he experienced.

I saw similarities between Hunter S Thompson and the historical figure of Rochester, both characters who pushed to the extreme and took real risks, I read Depp saw him as similar too.

I think he likes that kind of person as much as I do, and wants to celebrate them, and of course Rochester is a gift of a role, all life is there
