I think I read/heard about this a little while ago and just found it so odd I didn't really pay attention. I guess it's possible as an investment;I just don't picture him living there?

Depputante - July 28, 2007 07:28 AM (GMT)
The only thing that me , as a parent would cause me to purchase such a place, would be it's location to work, or school. I'm doubtful that Johnny, having so much money would need to worry about either. Rumors are fun though.

I don't know anything about this site, but here's their "take" on this story:

Depp Plunges In?
Friday, July 27, 2007, by Dakota

Unless downtown boosters are now making prank phone calls to the media, Johnny Depp just plunked down $2 million for a penthouse at the Eastern Columbia building, reports TMZ.com. As it turns out, Curbed was at the building last night for a party thrown by Eastern Columbia's developer Kor and was told that the penthouse was still available for purchase, so we're a bit confused by this story....we're going to make some calls...
UPDATE: Yup, it's true. A source says he bought one of the six penthouses.

Yet again, time will tell. The "rumor" sure is giving this building with a lot of apartments to sell a lot of FREE publicity. lol

JohnnyDeppLover - July 28, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
I actually don't think that this rumour about Johnny buying a penthouse in L.A is true since Johnny already has an house in L.A that's why I think it isn't true.
But again time will tell :)

Hibblette - July 28, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)
If he's done this it's only as an investment I would imagine.

Karen - July 28, 2007 01:32 PM (GMT)
There really could be many valid reasons... pure investment or wanting to help revitalize the downtown area (which was skanky the last time I was downtown about 4 years ago) or a place for business meetings and interviews that isn't a hotel or his office or actual home. Or it could be a rumor. OR all of the above. LOL

Parlez - July 28, 2007 02:15 PM (GMT)
He bought it so that we have someplace to stay other than those cheap hotels at Disneyland for the next POTC premiere! woohoo

pegs223 - July 28, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
I was under the impression that he owned a house
that had once belonged to a another famous actor.
(My history on Johnny has a lot of holes in it.)

Perhaps it is to host folks working with his production company during development of some of the Infinitum Nihil projects?

Lacurbed also had a post on June 1 that Johnny and his rep looked at one of the lofts on May 31. This is feeling more and more solid.

  Johnny Depp Eyes Eastern Columbia
Friday, June 1, 2007, by Dakota
A trusted Curbed source passes on some excellent downtown-boosterism news: Yesterday, Johnny Depp looked at a unit in the Eastern Columbia Lofts. We knew about Depp's home in France, but according to Wikipedia, the actor also owns residences in Los Angeles and the Bahamas. Kor Group declined to comment on our Depp news, but we're certain this is no Beckham Biscuit smoke-and-mirrors story.

and this comment was posted on the TMZ site:

Actually live in this building and we did see him and his rep. looking.  The penthouse in question is amazing 3 stories and really out of control.  The remaining penthouses are a bit higher at 2.2 and above. ..the building was built in 1930 and was a dept. store for many years the building is not new and is also deemed a historical landmark.

More real estate rumors! *tsk/sigh* ;)

When I read about this, I immediatley thought "yes, perfect!" for Johnny. Are any of you familiar with the architecture of this gorgeous building? It's an amazing Art-Deco structure and is the most beautiful in all of Downtown. (OK, I'm a bit biased because I've loved this building since childhood) I'm wondering that IF this is true, Johnny bought it just because he liked the way it looks. Maybe it's his way of getting closer to "living back in the 1920's or 30's"? As we say, time will tell, but if it's true: Hey Johnny! I'd be happy to live on-sight and take care of the place for you! :P

Hibblette - July 28, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
Well it's quite possible that this is for business purposes. To hold interviews that look like he's comfortable and at home but not actually be invading his home.

Yes, sure seems like it--I saw this in the paper this a.m. and laughed as it's in the real estate section and it looks like they need to sell some more units. TMZ ran a similar but snarky article about the same thing so I won't even post that here---thanks for the scan!

They just won't give up on this one.

DOWNTOWN - Confirmed! Maybe. A reader sends in a second hand report of a scruffy individual at the Eastern Columbia. "Yes, Johnny Depp does live in the Eastern Columbia. One of my profs lives there as well and she saw him in the lobby. Scruffy, unshaven, but unmistakably Depp." [CurbedWire Inbox]

I suppose he needs more space for his tomato growing!

Good grief, if he owns the property, why wouldn't he be there? Could be holding meetings there...who knows. Sheesh Isn't the building "sold out" yet?

They sure like to throw his name out a lot don't they ;)

I notice that Ruth Ryon started her last "Hot Property" column for the LA Times with Johnny's name. Great eye-catcher for the article.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Ruth Ryon, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
April 13, 2008

Editor's note: After more than 1,300 columns, this is Ruth Ryon's last installment of the feature she created in 1984. Hot Property was kicked off on Nov. 25 of that year with an item on Johnny Carson's purchase of a Malibu home for $9.5 million, a record setter at the time. Read her farewell on Page 12.

Johnny Depp had a lofty notion, and now actors John Stamos and Frankie Muniz are following in his footsteps.

All three have an interest in the lofts in the Art Deco Eastern Columbia Building in downtown Los Angeles, according to area real estate agents.

The 13-story tower, designed by Claude Beelman in 1929 and developed as lofts by the Kor Group, is sheathed in turquoise-colored terra cotta. Kelly Wearstler Interior Design created the common areas and some loft interiors, including one with three floors and two master suites.

Prices for the lofts on the penthouse floor, where Stamos and Depp are reported to have purchased, range from $1.4 million to just under $2 million. Stamos bought his unit directly from the developer.

Among its amenities, the tower has a rooftop pool deck and a fitness studio.

Stamos, now 44, appeared in 1981 as Blackie Parrish on "General Hospital" and then moved on to "Full House" for eight years as Uncle Jesse. But as his acting career was growing, his marriage was failing, and he was divorced in 2005 from model-actress Rebecca Romijn.

The actor appeared in 2002 on Broadway in "Cabaret," and in 2006 he signed on as a series regular on "ER," playing Dr. Tony Gates.

While building a house in the L.A. area for himself, Muniz, of "Malcolm in the Middle" fame, has reserved a two-bedroom, 2,900-square-foot loft at close to $2.9 million, real estate sources said...

Thanks Carpediem for sharing that one, isn't it interesting that Johnny's name kicks off the article? lol

Do you think Johnny could be buying the penthouse as an investment? I can't imagine that he would ever sell his mansion in West Hollywood?

I think you are correct. I read someplace when this story first appeared that the loft was purchased by a trust that Johnny had set up. (From the money earned from POTC?). This would make it an investment property which would make perfect sense. B)

Hi
I saw a a LA property web site that said not only has he brought this penthouse .which is the largest of six .But has also done two walk thoughs with a view to purchasing a second adjacent to the first.
I also heard a rumour that he is moving his production company to LA so this would make sense if the penthouses were going to be used as offices for Infinitum nihil( hope i spelt that right).

Karen - April 14, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
Infinitum Nihil has been LA based, so I'm not sure what you mean by his moving them to LA.

shadowdog - April 15, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Ok now you are stretching my poor little old grey cells. I thought IN was sharing offices with another production company in Santa Monica and didn't have separate LA office space. Of course this was some time ago.

The two most recent physical addresses (not postal suite addresses) I have had for the IN production company have both been in Los Angeles proper.
