I was hooked on this show when I was younger---would be great to see Johnny in this, but as with other projects, time will tell.

'Dark Shadows' sees the light
Warner teaming with Depp, King
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins.
Warner Bros. is teaming with Depp's Infinitum Nihil and Graham King's Initial Entertainment Group to develop a feature based on the '60s daytime supernatural sudser "Dark Shadows."

Depp has said in interviews that he has always been obsessed with "Dark Shadows" and has wanted to play Collins, the vampire patriarch of the series. The role was originated by Jonathan Frid.

A rights deal just closed with the estate of Dan Curtis, the producer/director who created the soap that aired weekdays on ABC, from 1966 to 1971. Depp and King will produce with David Kennedy, who ran Dan Curtis Prods. until Curtis died last year of a brain tumor.

Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric, spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves, ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival conventions. Numerous TV revivals of the series and pic adaptations have been attempted over the years but none with as high-wattage a star as Depp.

Depp, who is coming off "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," is next expected to star in "Shantaram," a Mira Nair-directed adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel that Depp, King and Plan B are producing for Warner Bros. Depp, King and WB are also mobilizing to make a film about the life of Alexander Litvinenko, with Depp poised to play the former KGB agent, who was fatally poisoned.

For those of you who never saw Dark Shadows...here's the original Barnabas Collins. And this was one hot TV series in the late 60s and early 70s. We all came straight home after school to watch it. LOL

'Allo everyone!

Can't believe it's been a month since I was last able to pop by... horrors!

Of course, it takes me being laid up with a bad back to find some free time these days, so of course as soon as I had enough pain meds in me, you know where I had to come to get my updates!

And WOW!!!!

Dark Shadows was HUGE when I was growing up! It was our "after school" program in the 60s!!!!

I hope this project goes all the way!

Miss you all so much -- hope I'll be able to pop in more often!

Love & hugs to all!

Beck

I'm one of those souls that never watched that show becuase one I was only two years old when it started on TV plus matriarch of my family really didn't like us kids watching things like that. I may have to catch up on this so I can see what was so exciting. The thoughts of Johnny as a vampire seems quite entertaining.

Oh heck I loved Dark Shadows.

Barnabas was so well portrayed that he maybe the first vampire that was seen with a sense of compassion. You really felt for his character. I loved Josette and Angeligue. Actually this show paved the way for Forever Knight, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer and Angel. I think it also was an influence on Interview with a Vampire though she may not admit it-I think it was.

And gawd I remember this show. Being scared. Being in awe of the ghostly Josette and really feeling for poor Barnabas.

I remember how a little upset I was that they did the movie with Quentin's character and didn't do one with Barnabas. I even had a book that was written that was about Barnabas and it had werewolves in it. I could just see the action in my head clearly.

Wow. This brought memories back.

Oh, Johnny is perfect for Barnabus Collins! Oh, heck, he is just perfect period!

No Dark Shadow over on this side of the puddle, so it looks like we missed out big time. :(

BUT....The possibility of seeing a movie of it, with Johnny as a ....I'm going weak at the knees....VAMPIRE!! OH MY!!!! :thud

A dream come true. woohoo

Hiya Beck, sorry you are having back troubles, I hope it clears up soon matey.

Seems I am the only one out of my Johnny buddies that never saw Dark Shadows. Guess I'll just have to "imagine" Johnny in that role.

Wasn't there also a Dark Shadows that came on in the early 90's that was one of the late night soap opera's they had on late night television. I keep thinking that there has been an newer version since the 60's.

Yes there was one in the early 90s I think, it was pretty good, but didn't find an audience. One of the women from my soap (Another World) was in it, Joanne Going. It was pretty decent, but didn't make it.

I loved it too. Everyone at school watched it back in the day. I think Johnny will make a very sexy Barnabas. :upinsmoke

I was born in '83 but I'm almost certain that I saw a few episodes of the original version of this show as a child. Perhaps it was reruns that aired on tv, or my mom may have recorded it because I know she was a big fan of the show. That picture of Barnabas just seems to familiar to me for some reason. Regardless, I would love to see Johnny play this role.

sparrowgirl77 - August 16, 2007 08:10 PM (GMT)
I never heard about Dark Shadows, but just the idea of Johnny as a vampire makes want to see this.I am so looking forward to it.
