Many thanks!

daisylovesdk - June 13, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
I guess I am the first to post about the event......

First of all I want to thank Karen for giving us the opportunity go, it was definately a night to remember! I met up with Belinda at the theater, she was an absolute sweetheart and gave me advice on what to expect. Jeff who ran the event said it would be a full house and was happy that everyone got in. The movie started, and it was a real pleasure to see AWE with true T&T fans. I have to confess that I did "duck out" for a smoke break after Jack and Lizzie parachuted off the Dutchman. It was definately worth it!

As I was getting my "fix" I noticed that Ted came outside. To my surprise he smoked the same brand that I did. They are quite rare (Djarum cloves) and I joked about how they were popular in the 80's. We talked about the film and I thanked him for the wonderful job he and Terry did on the trilogy. I also walked over to Terry and asked if he remembered me from the red carpet and at Pirates-n-Plunder. When I reminded him of the comment I made about a certain "ship sinking" he laughed.

I also got to meet Ginger from here, she is an absolute doll! *hugs*

We went back inside for the Q&A......Ted and Terry's insight about the movie was amazing, they were also hilarious in the little comments they made. Jeff (the gentleman that ran the event) said the podcast should be on itunes next week. I highly recommend everyone listens to it!

Thank you again Karen.....I am forever in your debt :D

Sparrowette - June 13, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
How wonderful! Sounds like you had so much fun! Glad you were able to go and to meet up with other JDR clan.
Thank You for postung about your special evening!

I'm so thrilled that you got to meet a couple of our JDR members and that you had such a fantastic "extra" experience while outside of the event!! Thanks so much for writing up your report so quickly!! Now I can't wait to hear the podcast!! WOO HOOO :jdr people are the best!

herestoyou - June 14, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
Thanks for the great report, can't wait for the podcast. Ok, now if it will be a podcast for itunes, do you need to pay to download it?

Miroux - June 15, 2007 01:51 AM (GMT)
Hi All!

Okay first off. There's probably nobody here who's not seen the movie yet...but just in case...

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in attendance Tuesday night (thanks again Karen, for the rare opportunity)
It's not often you get to attend a special screening and then are treated to an insider's view of the movie you've just seen. The "host" did a fine job of asking questions that would produce interesting answers and Ted and Terry were generous in their answers. Especially Ted. They spoke of the mis-conceptions that the scripts were never done in time and such. They spoke on the process of creating a script from the story point forward and they talked at length about the opening scene and the hanging of the child. How the studios was unsure at first, as you'd expect, but once they saw it, were on board. They spoke of the song written for them to sing and how if you listen to its lyrics, it tells the story of Calipso and of Davy Jones. They said there'd be many extras on the DVD 3-pak (can't wait for that) and they talked about the minute to minute process of writing and re-writing, from the bus in to the shoot, to the bus out from the shoot, day to day...and of the rarity of screenwriters being on-set.
There was much more, but darned if I can remember everything. Hopefully someone can fill in the holes. I can confirm that Ginger had a wonderful experience outside with Ted and Terry beforehand, but I will let her tell her tale.

Triple thanks again Karen!

Thanks so much Miroux!! U appreciate your giving us your report on the evening. I can't wait for the podcast!

Persuade me.

I had to go out of town to visit my mom so I didn't have time to post anything before I left, and I just got back 2 days ago & am catching up now!

It was so great to meet Daisy (hey girl!) and to see Belinda again.

I decided to take a smoke break about an hour before the movie ended so I went out to the lobby and I sure timed it perfectly! Ted & Terry came in early & were just hanging out. Terry came over & asked why I wasn't inside watching the movie. I told him I'd seen it 5 times so he had to give me a break. He was okay with that! He was asking me what was my favorite of the 3 movies (the first one) and what's my favorite part of all of them. Hard to choose, but right now my favorite part is the end of AWE. He said "Ahh....Will & Elizabeth..." I said "noooo, Jack in his dinghy", which kind of surprised him. And then he launched into this whole thing about how the movie is really about men not understanding women, and how the dinghy is sexual symbolism. I won't go into graphic detail but we had a pretty fun discussion of the various x-rated symbols in the movie!

I went outside & talked to Ted and Daisy. Ted said they were pretty much done with the press stuff, but you never know when something will come up. They were scheduled to do commentary for the DVD that week. I really enjoyed the commentary they did on DMC and he seemed to appreciate that. We talked about Keira & Jack Davenport's commentary on COTBP and how hysterical it was. He said Johnny & Gore just got drunk & did their bit. (How would he know? He wasn't THERE!)

It was great to just TALK to the guys. And I DID ask the question (in case Miroux didn't get the chance)........of Ted........all I had to say was "What mark....." and he started to laugh. I said "do I need to finish that sentence?" and he said "no. It's Chinatown baby. Watch Chinatown. We'll never know what it is." And that was the answer I was hoping he'd say. (By the way, the question for those of you who haven't asked it, is "what mark did Jack Sparrow leave on Cutler Beckett".) So next time I watch Chinatown, I'll think of Ted.

These guys talk in complete movie analogies. They're all about images and words, and you find out about characters in a film by what is said about them by OTHER characters in the film. They're really interesting to talk to, but since I don't live in a screenwriting world, it's hard to keep up with all the subtle bits they refer to.

They were very ambiguous about POTC4. They wouldn't say anything at all, even off the record, which is interesting. Who knows? They're moving on to other projects and they've got a really solid reputation, so they won't be hurting for work. They're obviously very social guys and enjoy talking to people....otherwise they would've kept their distance & wouldn't have approached us in the lobby.

They were quite entertaining on stage and played off of each other in a very comfortable relaxed way. Quite interesting evening!

herestoyou - June 23, 2007 05:40 AM (GMT)
Thanks so much for your report, sounds like an interesting evening. I've been visiting TNT's Wordplayer site and reading some of their comments to questions they've been asked about AWE, and yes, there are a lot! Great that you got to talk with them. I like the idea of the mark left by Jack on Beckett as not being completely explained(yes, I know there are some disgruntled fans that were upset about this), but I don't mind leaving it up to interpretation. The one idea I don't buy into is that Beckett was made a eunuch by Jack.

Hey Banana!......I still need to get those licorice papers

That was a great report, I missed the "sex talk" you had with Terry. I must of been over teasing Ted about being the only other clove smoker I know.

Rose Sparrow - June 23, 2007 11:07 AM (GMT)
Thank you for sharing that with us Banana!
Good grief! I haven't seen Chinatown in ages so I guess I'm going to have to go and rent it now!
Symbols you say...? I'll have to keep an eye out for those as well, although I have noticed a few! :shistle

Karen - June 23, 2007 01:14 PM (GMT)
Thanks so much for your report Banana!!! I see we HAVE to talk! I want to hear about all of the sexual references....LOL Jack...the dinghy...the mind boggles... oh let's back track to the Kraken................. :shistle

Sounds like your timing was brilliant and that you got to spend some really good time with the guys! And you are right, they are generous with the fans!!

Many thanks for such a FABulous write up for us! :thanks

Chinatown, you say?? That seems like a looong way from Tortuga! I must rent and watch it again...
Other than Jack describing his 'ship' to the wenches, I didn't pick up any sexual innuendos in AWE... Help! What did I miss???

Maybe it's just my mind, but I also thought the whole Jack/goat scene, the competing telescopes and the "boons" scene were part of that........

Yes indeedy....all the cannons and the cannon balls and the telescopes, and then there's the goat. Had a bit of a discussion about bestiality and how it would totally be not relevant to the kids in the audience. To them, Jack and the goat was just a very funny scene. But to the adults it took on a different meaning. I think that was a very fun part of writing for them.....to put in those double meanings that would appeal to all different ages on different levels.

A word about the Chinatown reference.....the "mark" on Beckett is not about anything specifically physical (like Jack's Pirate brand), but Ted said you should notice what's being said in that scene...about treachery and betrayal. And with Chinatown, it's a psychological burden that he carries with him....but we'll never know what happened to that character in the past. Whatever it was affected him in some way and stayed with him. I think it's a nice little brain tease that you'll always wonder about.

Screenwriters! go figure....

Parlez - June 23, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
Okay - I got the dueling telescopes and cannons but I didn't get the goat, as it were, so thanks for that! :thumbsup I'm beginning to understand that T&T are masters of the 'brain tease' - bless their convoluted little hearts! I was afraid their reference to Chinatown had something to do with somebody getting their nose sliced by Roman Polanski - something I'm pretty sure Johnny wouldn't want to pass up - but now I see it's waaay over my head/brain. Whew!

daisylovesdk - June 26, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
Karen asked me to share what I wrote down from the Q&A from Ted and a couple weeks ago. This is from the notes that I took, please keep in mind that I don't do shorthand well and there was a lot of information. Everything might seem random.....hopefully the podcast comes out soon so you can "fill in the spaces" of what I might of missed.

................This was the portion where Jeff interviewed Ted and Terry

The structure and story of AWE was already worked out while DMC was still in the theaters. They knew that Will would become the COFD before DMC, but they added the sword in the heart part later on.

The locker/purgatory scenes were inspired by "Marooned" by Howard Pyle. Here is that picture- http://pirateshold.buccaneersoft.com/hold/hpyle-marooned.jpg

Jack gave up immortality because it was the right thing to do. He seemed like he was always bad, but in the end he was a good man by doing an altruistic act. They commented about how he dove in after Lizzie in COTBP, and look where that got him.

It just so happened that Jack's agenda "aligned" with Will and Elizabeth. This reminded me of the line when Norrington said to Elizabeth "Our destinies have been entwined, but never joined"

They talked about the "hanging" scene. They thought the studios would be *iffy* about it, but it had to be done. A very delicate moment is when the boy starts singing and they bring out the barrel. They got the idea for writing "Hoist the Colors" from an article on Snopes regarding Blackbeard. You can read it here- http://www.snopes.com/lost/sixpence.htm They were orginally going to use "Blow the man down"

The studios were also a bit *iffy* about the Will and Elizabeth love scene at the end. Ted said that it shouldn't be a problem. They were two married people....she was wearing his boot, and he was kissing her knee. Why should violence be allowed and not a love scene between a husband and wife.

They elaborated a bit on the production. They didn't like they trailer they were supplied, so they would go sneak into Bruckheimer's instead. They would spend a lot of time with the cast and crew going over scenes on the bus to and from the sets. They would shape the sequences and complete the structure as a drama, adding in the "fade-in" and the "dialogue". So that the audience could get the ideas across. They also commented that not one of these drafts was over 105 pages.

They liked the idea of other characters telling a story in which they used Gibbs. They compared him to Quint from the movie "Jaws" and how he was used for the exposition of backstory. He used the example of the parlay scene, that there were 6 characters (Beckett, Barbossa, Davy, Will, Lizzie, Jack) and those that paid attention would know their agendas.

They mentioned about the cut ending of DMC.....the edges of the map being filled in, the scene where Norrington is about to stab the heart, and the FD coming to Port Royal.

They don't know how Davy killed his pet. How the scene showed that the world was changing, and the comment from Jack "The world is the same size, there's just less in it".

They wished there would of been anothert month of post production, and Terry commented that he wish they kept the line from Davy when he was fighting Jack on the yardarm. "Have you never loved? My freedom was forefit a long time ago". It was explained that Davy felt that loving someone was a loss of freedom, and in comparison that Will gave his heart to the one he loved.

In regards to Keith Richards....His character was pivotal and necessary. They couldn't of made Teague one of the Pirate Lords because Jack wouldn't of been able to choose Lizzie as the Pirate King. How could he vote against his dad? They also added they really didn't want Jack to have to have a father, but Johnny had mentioned in the press the role that Keith was going to play. So they had to work with that and add in the "Where's Mum scene" (in the book it never says Teague is his father, just that he hands him a shrunken head) Also, yes the rumors about Keith were true. Gore had to "hold him up" and Keith kept leaning over. His hat kept blocking Johnny's shots.

The way they made the monkey shiver when they were going through the glaciers.....The chest that the monkey was sitting on was vibrating. Now I have to pay better attention on the next viewing!

Cuttlefish.......Gore wanted to add "cuttlefish" to the script. T&T searched it out and read that they are a type of cannibal squid. They used it in as an argument for hiding out in Shipwreck Cove and sideways to logic in Jack's relationship to Lizzie. They found out later that Gore didn't even know what a cuttlefish was, he just thought the word was funny.

They asked how many people realized that Will had already made the deal with Sao Feng even before Barbossa and Lizzie went to the bathouse.

More production notes about the "Parlay" scene. They tried to film that while still filming DMC, and they had to fly Geoffrey Rush in. The problem was that sandbar is only visible 1 week out of every 3 months. The first time...they arrived too late, the second time...the hurricane hit, they finally got the shot on the third try.

They wanted to show Davy Jones all "un-tentacled" to prepare the audience for when the FD crew became normal.

They compared Jack's line from Rumrunners Island "At least the company is better" to what happened in the Locker. That Jack doesn't like his own company, and the worst thing would be surrounded by "himself".

T&T hoped they would of put in the scene at Shipwreck Cove that we had read in the 100. That it was a community, a type of utopia. With kids playing and where a pirate could be safe 24/7.

Now for Beckett's ending.....I really enjoyed the insight they shared. The scene was pure cinematic demise, with the world falling down all around him. They noted that Beckett was not a killer, that he always had others do it for him and that's why he didn't yell "FIRE". His talent was to manipulate others, like he did with Norrington. He also tried to "plant seeds" in Lizzie's mind that she was only after Jack, but she was the only one that wasn't fooled. In the end Beckett was out maneuvered, with no power, and everyone was against him.

.........This is where the audience submitted questions (no, sorry I wasn't picked)

Q. Why didn't Lizzie kill herself to be with Will on the FD?
A. One it was already done by Richard Wagner here- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flying_Dutchman_(opera) More importantly, Will has a chance to escape (break the curse) but if Lizzie died she would have no chance.

Q. A comment about the bittersweet/problem ending
A. The hero only gets part of what he wants, the studio was supportive of this.

Q. In regards to a POTC4
A. AWE was the correct ending for the story/trilogy. *When* they attempt to write a screenplay it will be about a separate issue.

Q. What was the mark Jack left on Beckett?
A. They compared it to the movie "Chinatown", it was something bad but it was never said. Terry did make a joke that it was a scar behind Beckett's left ear, something like a hickey.

Q. Why did Sao Feng think that Lizzie was Calypso.
A. In Sao Feng's world, all other women acted submissive towards him (Lian & Park, and his other attendants). Lizzie was the only woman with a dominant nature, which made him believe she was Calypso a goddess.

herestoyou - June 26, 2007 05:22 PM (GMT)
Thanks so much for the informative post. I check TNT's Wordplayer site so a lot of questions have been discussed and replied to by TNT concerning the scenes you mentioned. Even though I have issue sometimes with some of their comments, I think they are really gracious when it comes to answering questions. How great for them to be on set and rewrite or change scenes as actors/director, etc. gave input.

Surprising to me was that Norrington was going to stab the heart. I thought I also read somewhere that Gov. Swann was going to stab the heart as well. I don't know if they commented on this, but in my mind it seems like Calypso was the one that would choose the next FD captain. Just all those "touch of destiney" lines, especially when she sees Will in DMC. Jack wanted to "change the facts" so he could be Captain, but I wonder if Calypso either forsaw what Davy would do, or if she had some hand in it.

Thanks again,
Donna

Thank you so much for sharing your report with us daisylovesdk!
I think you took excellent notes! woohoo

Interesting how they described Shipwreck Cove as a community and a safe place for pirates and their children. Makes me wonder if Shipwreck Island could be where Lizzie raised her son. After all, she was king and had to keep the chest safe.

Parlez - June 26, 2007 09:58 PM (GMT)
Let me add my thanks, daisy, to everyone else's for this amazing report! I never would've had the presence of mind to pay such close attention or to write such comprehensive notes - great job!
:thumbsup
I like the idea of Shipwreck Cove/Island being a safe haven for pirates and their families ~ assuming pirates have families or that they live anything remotely resembling ordinary lives, anywhere. If they do, and if it's there, then I'd place Elizabeth firmly in the scene with her child, waiting.....

Those of us who can't attend these things really do appreciate everything that you all can tell us becausae, bottom line most of us never will be able to be at anything like this, and when someone from JDR can go and bring news and reports back to us...we appreciate it so much.
