Thanks to Karen the amazing! I was at the screening last night. I had read Perfume years ago and thought it was such an intriguing book. The film is gorgeously shot. I think it effectively portrays the power of scent when you as the audience member can't actually smell what's on the screen. The film is a great thriller. Ben Whitshaw is suitably creepy as Grenoille (although in my opinion too good looking). And the movie had me all the way up until the end and then it was like I suddenly walked in an entirely different theater. I was sitting there scratching my head asking my friend (who had also read the book) if what we had just seen was in the book because I would have remembered something that. I totally get why the filmmaker did what he did, but it didn't stop the jarring feeling I got.
I look forward to hearing other reviews for JDR members.
