Discussion question #2 What would he look like?
Since this book contains no real character and there fore no description, if Depp were to play Whimsy, how would you describe his look? Costumes? Would you think this would be set in another time? Today? US? UK?
There are no right or wrong ideas here... ;)

Nobody's answered this one yet, so i'll take a chance at being wrong. When I saw that picture from that art exhibit. Where Johnny has that fur coat on? Thats what I had in my mind when I was reading this book. But without the facial hair. And a bit like Willy Wonka, see page 17.

I think that Johnny could take a look at his own collection of suits he has worn over the years to outfit the Whimsy character-two that come to mind besides the brilliant reference to Wonka by HeidiGrant40 are the red shirt, red belt, and red toped shoes he wore to the Hollywood Foreign Press event over a year ago, and the outfit he wore for the Wonka movie premiere in 2005-the suits are vintage cut, unique, and illustrate several of the points in the book pages 24-51. To further incorporate the Whimsy character I think that the pony tail worn by Roux would fit nicely with the outfits mention above. I would incorporate a bit of facial hair-a neatly trimmed goatee (p 43 letter "g."). I envision the character outfitted as a "dandy" (p. 4-9) in the time period of today. Accent would be a hint of British or ivy league educated American-no slang permitted here. The chapter How to Become A Bon Vivant (p 20) describes the essential elements of costume and demeanor that the Whimsy character requires. Take a look at the blend Joanie did some months back of JD in all his suits and several of them easily could incorporate the "dandy" look described in the book. B)

Well put Anne! Thanks for reminding me about Joanie's pics!! Tomorrow we'll get into "Dandyism" and "How to be a "Bon Vivant"! This should be fun!!
HeidiGrant40 did point out the similarity to Willy Wonka and his look was purposefully vague as far as time frame. But I think you're right on the idea of an upper class British or Ivy League accent! Very pronounced, and overly correct, to the point of being "affected." LOL

Johnny is always so good at creating his characters that there would be no way that I could ever bring to justice anything that he would create. I know that when I was reading some of the whimsy's, that I had several Johnny characters come to mind, Willy Wonka being one of them.

Holly I agree Depp's Wonka embodies several facets of this book. B)
