Title: The Affected Provincial's Companion Discussion
Description: Discussion question #1 A screenplay?
Karen - April 14, 2007 01:41 PM (GMT)
Well, this certainly is a different and irreverent little bit of "whimsy" that Johnny's purchased the rights to. ;)
How do you think a screen play could be written to incorporate all or most of these
"fancies" laid out in the book?
Pretend, play, imagine....have fun!

Good ?? and I dont have an answer yet.. I'll have to ponder on this for a while.
I had a little bit of trouble getting into the book .. until I hit "The Joys of Lepidoptery" section. Now I'm starting to click with it more. But running in the back of my mind.. I keep thinking.. who would think of writing something like this.. lol.
Thinking a little bit more on it now though... maybe the main character could be like a columnist in a major newspaper.. the society pages.. or an editorialist.. that way the assorted different fancies could be presented. Could be showcased as him being the prime example .. or maybe he is the total opposite of what he writes.. or maybe centered around a group of friends.. who read the column.. as they try to step out of their comfort box

Ohhh those are very good ideas!! A columnist or style editor...LOL One someone who does those do-it-yourself-style programs on cable. Using that as a premise for the main character we could see them interacting with others in real life.
Good one MK!

Thanks!! I like that idea too Karen. A Cable type tv show.... on the set of the show.. he is.. or it could even be like a cohost.. a he and she.. a couple even.. and that they present themselves as this one type of demeanor and then leads like a 2nd life off the show... contradicting himself... themselves.. and they get caught at it .. lol
Or like a special daily/weekly segment on a news program.. like the morning news.. or an entertainment type show..

Can I offer something else? What if this dude that Johnny would play is really like this Lord Whimsy character? I mean, like for real. I know he's an alter ego thing. But I saw this guy sort of like Prince. Really out there.

Good question Karen. I was wondering this while I was reading it. How could they turn this unique book into a screenplay. I will have to think about this one some more and post my thoughts later.

Very interesting idea! Do you all think that it's possible to weave a story around these bits and snags of info? Develop a character?

MerryK I like your ideas. B) My screen play "Barbara Walters on Special Assignment: Step into the World of Grace and Beauty of Lord BS Whimsy" would be a 60-90 minute adult animated R feature with clay-mation characters. The feature would open with Lord Whimsy sitting on a platform in an ornate chair of the Victorian era in his beloved Pine Barrens bog surrounded by the frogs emitting their deafening QUONKs with fireflies, orchids, blueberry branches and various other plants indigenous to the Pine Barrens (p 150). Barbara Walters is on special assignment for her show The View and is conducting one of her interviews for her yearly special the Ten Most Fascinating People of 2007-Lord Whimsy's rank is 3rd of the 10. The first segment of the interview is an introduction of Lord Whimsy with remarks about the astounding success of his book in the US and in Europe. Walters then would ask Whimsy to explain his philosophy regarding The Guy vs. The Gentleman (p. 17). Besides the gift of words Whimsy possesses superior skills in the area of drawing and computer graphics and he would demonstrate for Walters the intricate details of a gentleman's dress such as knots, collars, hankerchiefs, boutonnieres, facial hair, different laces for grommets (p. 45), and the discussion would end with a discourse on the "Perils of Sportswear". To add interest to the interview Whimsy and other male figures would appear on screen in the various stages of dress while Whimsy relates the details to Walters. The next segment of the interview would feature Whimsy's poetry skills. Ms. Walters was given the advantage of an ivy league college education and is quite comfortable with the genre of poetry but she has reservations about the poems in Whimsy's book. In a rather confrontational tone she challenges Whimsy to interpret for her works from the book such as: To A Non Mouse (p. 55), The Wayward Knuckle (p. 59), Thro' A Codpiece Rusty (p. 73) and My Love Spurneth Yams (p. 109). Lord Whimsy smiles at Ms. Walters and pops a book in her hands and invites her to recite the poems together as in a duet. The poetry fuels a moment of passion and Whimsy offers Ms. Walters his hand and leads her into a waltz while the frogs continue their quonking. The last segment of the interview will feature Lord Whimsy attemtping to teach Ms. Walters how to ride a Highwheel (p. 66). Together the two are seen in the last scene of the interview riding along one of the flower laden roads in Whimsy's beloved Pines bog. Two days after the interview the feature would cut to the production offices of The View where Ms. Walters and her production crew are in the process of editing the interview-a call comes through from an actor named Johnny Depp who happens to own film rights to Whimsy's book-he desires as a professional courtsey a private screening of the unedited interview as he is in the process of developing the character of Whimsy for an upcoming film. The feature would end with Barbara, Rosie, and Mr. Depp enjoying a bottle of wine while Lord Whimsy and Walters on the screen reciting the poem Thro' A Codpiece Rusty with quonking frogs as the background music.

I am almost finished with the book, so there may be something else in there that will make me change my mind. I was envisioning along the lines of like "Rain Man" or "Forest Gump", where we have the main character be the things that the author went into such detail to explain to us in the beginning chapters.
