A mysterious cloaked figure helps Julien in his investigation into the missing scroll from time to time. But why?

Identity and intentions: unknown.

Could this person be someone we've already met? A supernatural figure? Any ideas on who this might turn out to be? Why they always show up at the right time? Why have a character who's a mystery to the readers?

It could be Father Calvet. Same stature. Also, he was friends with Father Marin so maybe Marin asked him to keep an eye on Julien if something should happen to him. And when they met, I think in the cemetery, didn't the figure say he was a friend? He does have excellent timing and I guess that's to keep Julien on the right path. And maybe he does have some powers but I don't he is supernatural.
I think he's hooded to conceal who he is from the world.

I have no idea why, but I think it may be one of the inquisition, possibly Inquisitor Moricant, he seems different to the rest of them.

If it isn't him, then my second guess would be Baron Tenier. He is trying so hard to get into the Dukes entourage, without success, but maybe it isn't for the reason we are led to believe. Maybe he knows more about the Duke than he lets on, and is really working against him.

Just some wild thoughts here, so I don't expect either guess to be correct.

Those are both good ideas!! The more I read and talk about this series, the more I want to read the rest of it! I keep wondering if it might not be a ghost or spirit?

I hate to see the last question come tomorrow...

This question has me stumped?

Good question, it's been awhile since I finished the books, but I also think it could be Brother Moricant------or maybe not!

Sure could be! :)

I've been thinking about this one! Opposition in repressive societies often manifests itself via secret resistance groups, which is what I feel the hooded figure ought to represent but doubt if it does. The figure is a sort of Deep Throat image, but I'm not sure if it is good or bad. It could be giving out information purely for its own ends.

Could be a Kabalist!

I had that thought too Anne, but then dismissed it, because they have heard the cloaked persons voice. If it was a woman, I would have expected them to mention the fact.

There again, maybe her voice was altered by magic.

OR....that sneaky Mr Nelson just didn't want to give the game away!! :D

I can't wait for the next book. woohoo

I think a Deep Throat type character could be right-----someone close to the Duke that doesn't approve of the way he's grabbing power perhaps? Now the resistance group idea would be possible too, but I think we might have had some kind of indication already if that was happening. Good ideas.

Yes, that would fit wouldn't it, especially since Julien has helped those that aren't part of the Catholic faith in his practice...........

Interesting theory------if she disguised her voice as was pointed out earlier. This is a fantasy story so why not?
