Here is what we've all been waiting for! Jeff's JDR exclusive report about ShoWest! Thanks to Jeff for taking the time to get this exclusive for us. I know he's been swamped as he also attended SXSW in Austin right after ShoWest. As always, please DO NOT repost this report anywhere in any form. Feel free to share and/or post the link to the report as this is an exclusive for JDR. Thanks. OK, here's Jeff's inside report of ShoWest....lots of goodies here.
Here is a review of Showest. There is a lot to mention since the convention is a week long. I think the majority of the readers here want only Johnny related news.
Miramax had a nice display up. It mainly focused on movies that were out in theaters now or coming out fairly soon. They had a big display of Sin City with all of the cut outs. This took up most of the space. Then they had a screen that shows clips of Sin City, Best of Youth , Dear Frankie and The Libertine. I thought it was a bit odd that they would not have clips of any of the big movies that are coming out this late fall and spring. They did have a poster book that had all the sample cuts. I am thinking that perhaps with the upcoming split with the Weinsteins, neither one wanted to focus on too many movies that may be in limbo between two companies. The Libertine clips only focused on Johnny. They had his monologues as their main focus which was a smart move on their end. They had a title slate, then his name, then the other stars then the clips. They did a nice job with the clips. It was loud so it definitely caught your attention if you were passing by. I think they would have been better off with a trailer, than just clips. However, by seeing the clips, it does make you understand what is going on better. I noticed people would wait there to see the clips of The Libertine then leave right afterwards. I feel the only down fall was that Miramax did not have enough staffers to keep up with all the people coming through asking questions. I know that is due to all the cut backs, but they could have hired some interns just to help greet people. They were passing out Sin City merch and just could not keep up. I quickly got out of the area as they were grabbing as many people as they could to help them pass out merch. I would not have minded but I had so many rounds to make all day, there simply was not time.
Warner Brothers deserves big kudos for all they had going. Big displays of all the upcoming movies. They had a huge cut out of Johnny as you hit the booth. Batman was on the other side. They had several TVs, one just for CATCF. Then the big screen would show different clips of various movies. The TV showed the trailer that is on line. Then they would show a clip that showed Pinewood Studios and the props. They also showed some clips I had never seen before, however they had the music playing over the clips so you did not hear them very well. Thinking about it now, I think it was done of purpose to create interest. They were passing out press releases on the movie, trading cards and candy. They had two reps per movie there, plus the WB publicity team. They were not missing a beat. They have a huge marketing campaign being created already for this movie's release.
So expect plenty of commercials, specials, magazine coverage and star promotions. This will be huge. The only downfall here is that you may not see this activity hit hard until after June 17 as Batman opens.
If it is planned very carefully, they can stomp it all out, hit light before June, then heavy in the last month before the release. They are already looking into dates for the premiere stop which should be at the Chinese Theater.
I think you ladies will be very happy with all the ideas they already have planned for this movie.
Disney mainly had POTC 2& 3 cards in their books. They did not have too much else. They had mentioned a possibility of a few dailies but they did not have any. I think they may not have wanted to focus on POTC 2 this early. I think it would have out shattered their releases that are due out before, like Herbie which was a big focus there.
Johnny was not at the convention but you may or may not know that he won the Showest newcomer award in 1990 I believe it was. Don't quote me on the date or fault me for having it wrong.
Robert Rodriguez was there. There was a very interesting display and demonstration on IMAX movies. They showed a small clip of CATCF during that presentation. The main focus, Star Wars was the hottest event at the convention. Johnny's sister was there. I only saw her one day. She looks different everytime I see her. She spent most of her time at the Miramax booth. She had a lady with her, an assistant I'm sure. She was mainly writing notes while watching The Libertine trailer. Then she would look at some stuff, then as soon as the trailer would start again, she would go back over with her notebook. Later, I saw her at the Warner Brothers booth picking out CATCF stuff to take with her. I think she gets a lot done since her last name is not Depp. The majority of the people there do not know that she is Johnny's sister. The people at Miramax did not recognized her until she said her name. I think I am not the only one who thinks she looks different all the time. I think she has taken on a bigger role now that Johnny has his own production company now. Someone did ask her about Johnny and Pirates. I think the person was some industry person's kid. She did not seem too happy but was nice and talked to the girl for a few minutes then politely excused herself.
The awards show was very nice. This has nothing to do with Johnny. Showest had some hot hitters there this year. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore. I have predicted that Johnny will make one of the special honors next year.
I hope my report was helpful. I never know what to write so that it keeps your interest. If any one has questions, let Karen know.
Jeff

This is a JDR exclusive and I ask that it please not be reposted in any part or form elsewhere. Please feel free to share the JDR link.
I emailed Jeff about y'all's questions and got this in reply. So we have more info too!! And please remember this is his take on things.
Christi did take some notes as did her assistant who kept going up to take notes. She took all the notes at the WB booth while Christi did business.
My take on why she was taking notes was to give feedback for an upcoming trailer. Also at the convention there was a lot of talk on whether The Libertine will stay with Miramax or go with Harvey. Miramax's answer was that as far as they know it is their movie. So that is basically an answer that means it is too early to say. There was lots of talk going on the whole week and much speculation. I won't repeat all the stories as not to add to or spread it all wider. My GUESS is that Harvey will negotiate for it as he is the one who stood by FN this year instead of pushing it back for the following year like most Miramax movies. If the movie comes out on a new indpt company, Malkovich and /or Johnny might end up being more involved in it's release which could be another reason why Christi was taking a close watch to see what Miramax was doing.
No promotion materials were being passed out on The Libertine. They did have a one sheet on it and some still movie shots in the poster book. I think they did have copies of the one sheet available for people to take. I know they did for CATCF. I will check my bags of convention stuff that I have yet to go through. If I do have it and there is nothing too personal on it. I will send to Karen to post for you all.
Once again this is my TAKE on this not what is happening with Christi and the movie.

Jeff, our JDR man on the inside, was nice enough to scan for JDR some of the promo materials he picked up at Showest.
More should follow as he is sorts out his materials from the two film conventions.
Please do not repost these anywhere, as Jeff scaned them for me to use for our JDR group only. This info was given out to certain industry members.
Please feel free to share the JDR link and direct friends here to JDR.
Thanks!

Quick question on the Charlie handouts: the first one talks about them exploring promotional partnerships with various industries. The first was QSR - what does that mean? Thanks.

Karen: Ok, I just got an email from Jeff about your question. Here's what he says:
I have asked WB to sure, but I am more than positive that QSR stands for Quick Service Restaurants. Quick service would be your burgers, chicken, seafood, pizza, Mexican, Asians, sandwich and shake categories. There is also a magazine by that name that features these foods. Warner Brothers did a tie-in with Subway a few years back when they released "Looney Tunes." I remember it being some big advertising campaign that tied in the characters and the movie. I am guessing that WB plans some kind of tie -in like this to further promote the movie. Signage and products in a QSR chain can get double the exposure than a billboard or commercial at times.
I will keep you posted when I find out for sure. I also remember Harry Potter and The Matrix doing something of this sort and both are WB movies. The "Looney Tunes" one stands out in my mind since the movie flopped, so all these "tactics" kept coming up in review meetings.
Edit- Jeff sent more info (Shoulda read all my emails first) :
Here are some more tie-ins from other movie companies. Thinking about this, this is a VERY smart movie on WB 's part......
McDonald’s - “Finding Nemo"
Baskin-Robbins -“X2.”
Wendy’s "Pokémon Kids’ Meal promotions
Burger King - "Rugrats"
